archipelago a group of many islands
bay part of an ocean or lake extending into the land and usually smaller than a gulf
cape a point of land extending into a body of water

gulf a part of the ocean extending into land usually larger than a bay
harbor a sheltered area of water where ships can anchor safely
isthmus a narrow strip of land with water on both sides, connecting two larger areas of land
oasis a fertile place in the desert where there is water and some vegetation
strait a narrow waterway connecting two larger bodies of water
tributary a stream or river that flows into a larger stream of river
canal a waterway dug across land through which ships can pass through
channel a narrow, deep waterway connecting two bodies of water; the deepest parof a river or waterway
desert a dry, barren region that may be sandy without trees
glacier a huge mass of ice that moves slowly down a mountain
island an area of land completely surrounded by water
lake a large body of water surround by land
mountain a land form with high elevation and a pointed or rounded top higher than a hill
mountain range a row of connected mountain
mouth (of a river) the part of a river where its waters flow into another body of water
peninsula land surrounded by water on all sides but one
plain a broad and gently rolling area usually low in elevation
river a large stream of water that flows into a lake, ocean, or other body of water
swamp low, wet land that supports grass or trees
valley low land between hills or mountains
volcano an opening in the earth's surface through which steam, ashes and lava are forced out

Absolute Location Is given in degrees of latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location)
Relative Location depends upon point of reference. Described by landmarks, time, direction or distance. The description of a location based upon the surrounding area
Physical Characteristics Landforms (mountains, plains, etc.), bodies of water (oceans, lakes, bays, etc.), ecosystems (soil, plants, animals, and
Human Characteristics Bridges, roads, buildings, culture, languages, beliefs. All places have features that distinguish them from other places
Place the physical and human/cultural characteristics that describe particular places on Earth
Movement The ways on which people, goods, and ideas/communication are transported from one place to another
Region a group of places that are all close together and have similar physical and human/cultural characteristics
Equator an imaginary line that separates the globe into the northern and southern hemisphere, at Zero degrees latitude, important line of latitude
Prime Meridian Imaginary line that separates the globe in to the western and eastern hemisphere; at zero degrees longitude
Continent - Name 7 A large land mass. North America, South America, Australia, Europe, Asia, Antarctica, Africa
Latitude Imaginary horizontal parallel lines that help to measure the distance north and south of the equator
Longitude imaginary vertical lines to help us measure the distance west and east of the prime meridian

Movement Question How are people and places linked by communication and the flow of people, products and information/ideas?
Human-Environment Interaction Question How do people relate to the place that they live in?
